Places to stay, things to do, good food and drink
The Campaign To Protect Rural England (CPRE) Gloucester recognises local projects which are outstanding in their contribution to the environment or to the local community. The CPRE have proudly presented The Wharf House with an award for the restoration of the Over Canal Basin and construction at The Wharf House, as they were greatly impressed by the thought and quality of design apparent in the project.
David Penny Commercial Director of The Wharf House and Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust has expressed his delight stating “This is the second award we have been presented with this month so, for the restoration work to be recognised at the same time as our restaurants performance, together with The Canal Trust we are humbled and encouraged with the support we are now experiencing ”.
He went on to thank the huge number of volunteers and businesses that had played a part in it’s success “it is so fitting that this award should come along a few weeks after the 10th Anniversary at the restoration at the Over Canal Basin – the biggest all volunteer site in the whole Country in 1999/2000” opened by Prunella Scalls and Timothy West.
The Wharf House is unique in the country being owned by The Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust with all profits returned to the Charity for long term restoration, maintenance and management of the Canal. The Canal Trust was formed as a Charity in 1992 with the objective of full restoration of the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal. The restaurant, visitor centre and shop are complimented by, 6 letting bedrooms with more on the way.
The largest solar array in Gloucester can now be seen of on the roof of The Wharf House. The array is made up 94 photovoltaic panels in the bid to become self sustainable and lower our carbon footprint for the future.
This second award provides acknowledgment of how much The Wharf House and The Canal Trust has achieved over the past ten years of which we have just celebrated the anniversary with a Tapas, Beer, Cider and Perry Festival. Of which the success has encouraged us to make a more frequent event in the future.
The Wharf House and Canal Trust are passionate about retaining this reputation and are looking forward to this years Christmas menu’s being just as well received. The Christmas season begins here at The Wharf House on the November 1st 2010 and runs right through untill January 31st 2011.
