Visit the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean

Places to stay, things to do, good food and drink

The Old Station, Tintern

The Old Station, Tintern

A few days after the Old Station at Tintern was voted the UK’s favourite park we received this poem the Revd Preben Andesoon which very nicely summarises this tranquil spot.

Just past the majestic Body of the Abbey with 900 years of history

whispering to the soul

lies the Old Station tranquil, remote, yet quite within reach, awaiting our visit,

our ultimate goal.

Where else can you park for hours on end for 70 p, meander and dream

enjoy an ice cream

take the dog for a walk, on the field with the sheep, and the valley beneath

and the hillside across

let the children run wild on the swings and the slide with the calm and the peace

and the utter release

from the stress and the woes

here everything goes.

A trip on the train for a pound go for miles

the chatter the smiles

the feeling of space yet away from the race

of everyday life

hand in hand with your wife.

We love this oasis of beauty and wonder, the treats there on offer

the never commercial warm invitation

to come round and see

and simply to be!

And on the way home, refreshed and recharged

the Abbey looms tall with the memories clear of an age dead and gone

and yet so alive as we treasure the contrast with where we have been

at the Station in Tintern where life carries on

and the valley is green.
