Monmouth Walking Festival Programme 2014

With the centenary year of World War I upon us, join us in the stunningly beautiful county of Monmouth to commemorate the Great War and World War II. Pay tribute to those who have fallen and played a part in the events and conflicts that occurred in Monmouthshire.  

The annual Monmouthsire Walking Festival is on again this year with the dates set for the 25th October until the 2nd of November with a fantastic programme planned for the year’s festivities.

Saturday 25th October

Wye Valley Challenge Walk Day 1
Join Peter Lloyd and Tristan Blanchard on this 18-mile trek from the beautiful Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth, crossing over Chase Hill and following the river to Symonds Yat and then on to Monmouth through the Wye Gorge. £10

Sunday 26th October

Wye Valley Challenge Walk Day 2
The second day of the Wye Valley Challenge sees participants walking a further 17 miles from Monmouth to Chepstow. Follow along the river with stretches along the banks of the Wye and the higher ground of the sides of the Wye Gorge with never ending spectacular views. £10

Monday 27th October

The Wye Valley wartime experience
Sarah Sawyer and Greg Dunn are leading you into The Wye Valley, which is in imminent danger from enemy troops. You are urgently needed to patrol the Piercefield Woods and viewpoints. It will take you almost three hours across four miles to cover all bases. £5 

Tuesday 28th October

In the footsteps of Charles Rolls
This six mile walk begins at St Maughans with Mark Langley and Dennis Manning talking you across the rolling countryside to reach the former home of Charles Rolls, the Hendre, and then on to the church at Llangattock Vibon Avel where he is buried. £5

Wednesday 29th October

World War I and II Memorial walk
Peter Lloyd and Susanne Carlino will be taking you on this nine-mile expedition from Trellech to Catbrook. You will visit Catbrook Memorial Hall, which is a former WWI USA military hospital and then returning via Ninewells Wood and Trellech Beacon. £5

Thursday 30th October

Fit 4 Life Walk Abergavenny Group
A leisurely four-mile stroll through the Sugarloaf Vineyard to Llanwenarth Church. The walk will be starting and finishing at the Abergavenny Leisure Centre. FREE

Friday 31st October

Kymin Halloween night walk
A two-mile family walk up to the Kymin Roundhouse and Naval Temple led by Diana Standing and Linda Phillips. Bring torches to enjoy this night-time walk and snack on Halloween treats. £5

Saturday 1st November

War Grave circular Abergavenny area
This 11.5 mile circular walk visits the Commonwealth War Graves from WWI to Afganistan in Abergavenny, Llanfoist, Llanellen and Llanover. Chris Brown and John Stephenson will lead you across the minor track roads and footpaths. £5

Sunday 2nd November

Monmouth ‘Marching off to War’ Commemorative Walk
Brian Ramsey and Tristan Blanchard will lead you on a walk to commemorate the journey taken by soldiers of RMRE in August 1914. Starting at Castle Hill you will continue along the bank of the River Monnow, cross to Beach Road and then turn into the Troy Gardens. FREE
