Places to stay, things to do, good food and drink
The village of Longhope, nestled in the heart of the Forest of Dean supported The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) to raise money for charity this year. The glorious Open Garden events saw over 580 people visit during the Bank Holiday Weekend and the first weekend in June.
Visitors were welcomed from all over the country including Newport, Evesham, Bristol, Bath, Swindon, Monmouth, Birmingham, Redditch, Stockport, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Newent and Ross on Wye. Some were even from further afield with visitors South Florida and West Virginia. The group also managed to raise a grand total of £4,443 for the National Gardens Scheme.
Longhope Gardens was voted best on tour, by a group of Austrian visitors beating Highgrove, Hidcote, Kiftsgate & Chelsea Flower Show. This will be aired in a ‘Nature in the Garden’ TV special in Austria & Germany in the autumn of this year.
The event provided some of the best trading days for Longhope bakery, The Forest Bakehouse and the Shepherds Hut as they opened again the following Sunday after the bank holiday.
Sally Gibson said “Thank you for all your support; it has really been appreciated by everyone involved with Longhope Gardens. We will be doing it all again next year but to be honest I’m not sure how we can top this year!”
